Gianni Morandi is one of the few names of Italian pop music having won fame and recognition beyond the boundaries of Italy.
Born on December 11, 1944 in Mongiadoro near Bologna, he recorded his first LP for RCA at the age of eighteen. His appearance in Neil Sedaka's TV show with the song "Tell your mother you're going for milk" was an immediate success. The song became a hit on the following day. This young man with a charming smile and modest behaviour on the stage won the hearts of the Italian audiences and later of audiences throughout Europe and America.
His songs "I'm not worthy of you", "Kneeling in front of you", "I closed the windows", "Harmonica", "I'm going to work", etc. enjoyed great success. A testimony of this are the 19 million singles and two million LP's sold.
In 1964 and 1965 he won the "Canzonissima" competition where his song was awarded first prize according to the listeners' poll. In 1965 he became winner of "Cantagiro" (a song tour around Italy) — there were rounds-in Paris, Vienna and Moscow as well. 1966 brought him another award — at the "Rose" festival of political songs where he participated with Mario Lusini's song "Stop with Rolling Stones". He has appeared with great success at a number of other festivals in Italy and abroad. At "San Remo '83" he sang his song "My favourite enemy". His songs have given the names of a number of films with Morandi's participation as both singer and actor. He has starred in Pietro Germi's film "The chestnuts are good" and in Lucciano Salti's "The country cousin".
In 1980 Gianni Morandi recorded the song "False songs" which was another great success for the Italian pop music.
He has toured in Spain, France, Japan, Canada, South America, the USSR and elsewhere. In Bulgaria Gianni Morandi is popular from his recital at the "Golden Orpheus" Festival and participation at the 1984 New Year Show.
